Is the IPL basically India's greatest reality show disguised as sport?

The cricket matters, but so do the auctions, camera cuts, fandom wars, redemption arcs and nightly meme explosions. Does the IPL win because of pure sporting quality, or because it has perfected the soap-opera machine around the game better than anything else in the country?
